What reading actually needs fixing?

Health Canada's guideline is 200 becquerels per cubic metre, and the advice is to act above it, with more urgency the higher you go. Below that, reducing further is still a benefit but not a call to rush. What matters more than any single number is that the reading came from a long-term test of at least three months: short-term tests swing with weather and how much the house was aired out, and people both panic and relax over numbers that a proper test would have changed.

How is it actually fixed, and does it work?

The usual method is sub-slab depressurisation: a pipe through the basement floor and a fan that vents the soil gas above the roofline, so it never enters the house. It is well understood and typically brings readings down substantially, and a professional will retest afterwards to prove it rather than asking you to take it on faith. Ask whether the post-mitigation test is included in the quote.
